About Can I Afford It?
Simple, honest calculators for everyday money decisions.
Can I Afford It? exists to answer one question well: is this purchase a good idea right now, given what you actually earn and have saved? Most online calculators stop at a single number. We try to explain what the number means, what it assumes, and what would change the answer.
How we build our calculators
- Every calculation runs in your browser using published, transparent formulas — the maths behind each tool is written out on its page.
- Rules of thumb are labelled as rules of thumb. Where we use a guideline such as a three-month emergency buffer or the 20/4/10 car rule, we say so.
- Every calculator page includes an explanation, a worked example and answers to common questions, because a tool without context is easy to misread.
- We publish in small batches rather than generating hundreds of near-identical pages.
Independence and funding
The site is free to use and is funded by advertising. We do not sell financial products, take commission on loans, or pass your inputs to lenders. Nothing you type into a calculator leaves your device.
